Geist

The GEIST project started in spring 2001. The project focuses on the development of a mobile edutainment system (i.e., a system that combines education and entertainment). Like in a historical novel, real history is explained through stories of individual characters. These can be fictional, but they should appear coherent to actual historical facts. To create a historic scenario we started with detailed historical research at EML. Aim of our GEIST-demonstrator is to teach pupils knowledge on the living conditions of residents of the city of Heidelberg during the period of the Thirty Years' War. The GEIST project addresses research and development of a novel technology, making conveyance of cultural heritage during a historic sightseeing tour a unique experience. The cornerstones of this system are mobile augmented reality, including a hybrid tracking approach (IGD), intelligent queries to pose complex questions about geographical and historical knowledge (EML), as well as a story engine to interactively run a digital story (ZGDV).
