ADVANCEMENT OF GEOSERVICES

GEOTECHNOLOGIES of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) (Research Program 13: "Informationssysteme im Erdmanagement: von Geodaten zu Geodiensten"). The project started in October 2002. However, our working group has entered later, in June 2003, as successor for a project partner that dropped out.

The connection to the Internet and mobile communication technologies offer new perspectives for geo sciences mainly by location independent access to distributed geo databases. A range of GIS companies now offer specialized tools for the visualization and processing of geodata on mobile devices. Most mobile GIS so far usually focus on geodata viewer functionality. If editing is supported they rely on off-line synchronization of the data when back in the office. First research prototypes or commercial systems also try to address the issue on-line editing, but - if at all - they then favour proprietary solutions, which are not based on standards. In particular they do not offer standard-based possibilities for the on-line transmission and update of the updated spatial data.

Objective of this project is to develop an overall concept for acquisition, administration, usage and visualization of geo data for mobile geo services. By components of a prototype system the technical feasibility and acceptance of the used methods within geo sciences should be shown. For a good reusability and extensibility of the software the communication between these components should be based on standards by the Open GIS Consortium.

The project partners separate the development of the above-described components into the following tasks:

  • Development of web based GIS components for online access of time-spatial objects in geo services (Osnabrück)
  • Mobile acquisition, updating, usage/analysis and visualization to geo data (Heidelberg, Munich) more information... (only in german)
  • Online visualization, processing and acquisition of 3D datasets with a mobile terminal backed up by augmented reality (AR) (Karlsruhe)
